Articul: 1405 100 tablets Historically Cascara Sagrada was well-known to inhabitants of North and Central America. Indian tribes considered it to be an essential universal remedy. Water extraction of the bark was used as an anti-inflammatory, a malaria fever reducer and as a cleanser of the liver and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Spanish conquerors in the XVI century brought the bark back to Europe; they called it Cascara Sagrada, which is translated from Spanish as “Saint Bark”, as they were impressed by its qualities. The Latin name of “Rhamnus purshiana” was given to the plant by the German botanist Fridrich Pursch. This plant is of much more value than Frangula alnus (Persian berry), as it is less irritant to the intestine. Cascara Sagrada is used as a purgative for severe and chronic constipation. Its specific purgative action is determined by the anthraglycosides in its content. They softly cleanse the intestine both the colitis and enterocolitis, at the same time it heals the mucous coating of the intestinal tract. The effect begins 8-10 hours after taking, which is why it should be taken before going to bed. The long latent period is determined by the fact that anthraglycosides are inactive right after taking as Cascara Sagrada’s glycosides cannot be split in the upper sections of the intestine. Henceforth glycosides are slowly hydrolyzed in the alkaline medium mainly by the large intestine bacterium flora and partially by mucous coated enzymes into the particles, which irritate the large intestine apparatus, and that causes its tension in muscle tissue and wavelike muscular contractions to increase. Under the influence of Cascara Sagrada fluid absorption from the intestine slows; as a result the intestine content volume grows and rarefies, which is also an additional purgative effect. Cascara Sagrada is effective, safe, and non-habit forming. But purgatives are not recommended to take before or right after other medicines, as it can reduce the absorption and efficiency of other medicine or dietary additives. Purgatives are not recommended to take for a long time in order to avoid water-salt metabolism disorders. They should be carefully indicated for specific liver functional disorders, arrhythmia, constipation of pregnant women and low- mobile patients, anal fissures, and hemorrhoids. Cascara Sagrada RBC:
